Manufacturers: licensing company data to AI

Manufacturers can license operational data such as quality records, work instructions, maintenance tickets and the email around production problems. The biggest legal limit is export control: technical data covered by ITAR or the EAR cannot be shared with a party that may give foreign persons access without authorization. Customer drawings and specs received under NDA are a second limit.

What manufacturer data is valuable to AI buyers?

Nonconformance reports and corrective actions (CAPA)
Root-cause reasoning on real defects, documented in a consistent format.
Work instructions and SOPs
Step-by-step procedures the company wrote, which agents use to learn shop-floor processes.
Maintenance tickets and downtime logs
Fault, diagnosis and fix sequences across years.
Purchasing and supplier correspondence
How parts shortages and lead-time changes are handled.
ERP workflow history, without pricing
Order-to-ship processes. Customer pricing is often excluded.

Typical tools: NetSuite, Epicor, SAP Business One, Plex, Fiix / UpKeep (CMMS), ETQ / MasterControl (QMS), Microsoft 365, SharePoint.

What are the risks specific to manufacturers?

ITAR technical data

Defense articles and their technical data are controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (22 CFR 120-130). Releasing it to a buyer whose contractors or annotators are foreign persons can be an export. Exclude anything ITAR-controlled.

EAR-controlled technology

Dual-use technology under the Export Administration Regulations can require a license depending on the destination and recipient. If you hold ECCN-classified technology, get export counsel involved.

Customer drawings and specifications

Build-to-print shops hold customer IP under NDAs. That material is not yours to license.

Trade secrets

Process parameters and recipes are often your most valuable secrets. Licensing them for AI training may destroy trade-secret status if the agreement does not protect them.

What should never leave?

  • ITAR or EAR-controlled technical data
  • Customer drawings, models and specs
  • Proprietary process parameters you treat as trade secrets
  • Employee medical and safety records
  • Customer pricing and contracts

Qualification checklist

  • Export classification is known for your products and technical data
  • ITAR/EAR material is in systems that will not be connected
  • Customer-owned files are excluded
  • You have decided which process know-how stays secret
  • The buyer confirms in writing where data is processed and who can access it

Questions

Can a defense supplier license company data to AI?

Only data with no export-control or CUI exposure, which for many defense suppliers leaves little. Talk to export counsel first.

Does an ISO 9001 quality system make data more valuable?

It makes records more consistent, which buyers generally prefer. It does not change the legal limits above.
